The Hellblinki Sextet
At The Jinx
[thejinx.net]
121 W. Congress St.
Rolling their bizarre carnival wagons into The
Jinx from Augusta on September 15th is a band of gypsies, pagans,
heathens, and face-painted oddities. The Hellblinki Sextet plays
something they describe as "pirate blues." Musically they land
somewhere between Tom Waits' LP Swordfish Trombones and a back alley
lounge band that plays on cans and bottles instead of actual
instruments. The drummer/guitarist fronted group blends music with
performance art, and their rusty rollercoaster clankety-clank sound
seems torn straight from an abandonded fair scene in any B-movie
thriller.
I can't reccomend this show enough; I've been wanting to see this band
again since the first time I laid eyes and ears upon them. It's a
unique textural experience in sight and sound that can't really be
explained properly on the printed page. Anyone who makes dirty
harmonies for pirates in 2006 should instantly grab your attention.
