Murmur Dec. 07
The Hellblinki Sextet
Friday Dec 24 11pm
The Jinx -127 Congress St.
The
only pirate blues band to ever come out of Asheville, NC is back in
Savannah, as our city is becoming a regular destination for these
painted-face strangers. If Tom Waits' album Swordfishtrombones was a
genre of music rather than a record, I would say that Hellblinki Sextet
plays swordfishtrombones. Fortunately it is not, because that
sounds retarded, and they have labeled themselves as playing pirate
blues.
Half Carnival, half tomato can band (on a dirty fisherman's warf from
an era that never exsisted outside of movies), these guys bring some of
the most interesting sounds and interesting performances that have ever
graced the stage of the Jinx. It's hard to know what to expect as
they have an ever-changing lineup of instruments - including woodwinds,
horns, guitars, violins and anything that can be banged upon to make
percussive noise. Anyone into Tom Waits' darker periods, Nick
Cave, Leonard Cohen or just the scary, metallic sounds you might hear
on Factor's Walk any night after about 3 am should like this band.
